Audemars Piguet Royal Oak – Ceramic “Comparable to Gold”
The Offshore, also known as the “large-sized sports model” in the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak series, has seen countless models released since its launch in 1993. But today, you can “completely forget” all the past models. Because in 2021, Audemars Piguet gave the Royal Oak Offshore a “complete overhaul.”
Audemars Piguet’s ceramic is comparable to gold.
Those familiar with Audemars Piguet know that the ceramic versions of the Royal Oak/Royal Oak Offshore are extremely valuable. Let’s not even mention the Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar White Ceramic, which is worth over a million dollars and far exceeds its retail price. Let’s compare it with the currently available Offshore Chronograph 26238 ceramic case and 26238 rose gold case.
The new Offshore Chronograph 26420 ceramic model features a black ceramic case, green ceramic bezel, green ceramic pushers, and a green ceramic crown. Except for a few edges, the watch has a large brushed finish. Just look at this brushing; Audemars Piguet's brushing technique on ceramic is remarkably sharp, a level of refinement not seen on ceramic watches from any other prestigious brand. Because ceramic is hard, it requires polishing with diamond powder, so ceramic watches from most high-end brands have relatively simple finishes (pure polishing or matte). However, the brushed effect on Audemars Piguet's ceramic watch is identical to that of the Royal Oak steel and gold watches, and combined with the luster of the ceramic, the effect is outstanding.
In addition to the black and green ceramic body, the Offshore Chronograph 26420 ceramic model also incorporates some titanium for color coordination, such as the crown guards and the crown cap.

The Offshore Chronograph 26420 replaces the previous 44mm and 48mm Offshore Chronograph models.
The Royal Oak Offshore Chronograph 26420, a brand new model released in 2021, completely replaces all previous 44mm, 48mm, and other large-sized Offshore chronographs with its 43mm size. The 26420 single-handedly dominates the "large-sized Offshore chronograph" market. Not only is the size new, but the dial is also redesigned. While the three sub-dials of previous Offshore chronographs were vertically arranged, the 26420 features a horizontal layout. The 30-minute counter is at 9 o'clock, the 12-hour counter at 3 o'clock, and the small seconds hand is at the bottom.
The dial's checkered pattern is a signature feature of the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak. The Royal Oak's checkered pattern comes in small and large sizes. Since the Royal Oak Offshore chronographs, when they were first launched (in 1993), used a small checkered pattern, the small checkered pattern has a more vintage feel, while the large checkered pattern has a more modern feel. The new Offshore Chronograph 26420 not only uses a large checkered pattern, but it's a completely new design.
We can see that the large checkered pattern on the new Offshore Chronograph 26420 features "X" shapes connecting the checkered sections. The entire checkered pattern is decorated with vertical stripes and beveled edges. This is a completely new design from Audemars Piguet after 2021, and it's now becoming increasingly common on new Offshore models. Models like the new Offshore Chronograph 26238 in black ceramic and the new Offshore 15605 with its three hands already feature this "X" large checkered pattern. The 18K white gold hands and hour markers remain unchanged.
Now, including this Offshore Chronograph 26420, all the main Audemars Piguet Royal Oak/Offshore/1159 chronograph models currently on sale have been upgraded with the Audemars Piguet 4400 series automatic chronograph movement (specifically, the 4401 in this 26420). The 4400 series is Audemars Piguet's new generation of automatic chronograph movements, launched in 2019. It replaced the in-house 3126/3840 modular chronograph movements and the outsourced 2385 chronograph movement (FP1185).
The 4400 series automatic chronograph movement uses a column wheel, vertical clutch combination, and flyback function. It has a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour and a power reserve of 70 hours. Compared to modern vertical clutch automatic chronograph movements such as the Patek Philippe CH28 and Rolex 4130/4131, the Audemars Piguet 4400 series, in addition to emphasizing performance, features more exposed components and more independent bridges (previous vertical clutch movements had more obscured bridges). It maintains Audemars Piguet's consistently top-notch finishing and intentionally incorporates more curves and sharp angles on the bridges to enhance the visual appeal. The black rotor on this Offshore chronograph 26420 is actually 22K gold plated black.
It's worth noting that the new Offshore Chronograph 26420 features a quick-release bracelet. Simply press the button on the back of the case, and the bracelet comes off. Audemars Piguet is now gradually popularizing quick-release bracelets on the Royal Oak Offshore.
Currently, there are two Royal Oak Offshore Chronograph models available: the 42mm 26238 and the 43mm 26420. In fact, the 42mm 26238's appearance is more "faithful" to the original 1993 Offshore Chronograph; while the 43mm 26420 is a completely new design, obviously more avant-garde and trendy. I think this is why Audemars Piguet retains two versions of the Offshore Chronograph.
Admittedly, the official retail price of the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak/Offshore models is not low, and the actual market price remains relatively high. However, the Offshore model, due to its larger size and thickness, is not acceptable to everyone. Therefore, among the Royal Oak models, the Offshore is a relatively more accessible option. If you don't mind the large size of the Offshore, it's a good choice among Royal Oak models. |
