Last month, a record-setting vintage Rolex Milgauss 6541 sold at auction for $2.5 million. It does look like a Rolex bought it. The results come just months after Rolex discontinued the modern Milgauss, which had been in production since 2007. Long the geek of Rolex's professional watches, the humble "scientist's watch" found itself making headlines this year without actually doing much.
Milgauss has never been the sexiest Rolex. Antique models are put in cases before being sold, sometimes for years. It's not a Pan Am pilot in a jet, a diver in the depths of the ocean, or Paul Newman in a race car. But science can also be sexy. Milgauss is probably best known for its links to Geneva-based CERN, CERN, the birthplace of the World Wide Web and the laboratory where scientists discovered the Higgs boson.
As the headlines converge, it's time to ask: What the hell is going on with Milgauss? Before we can actually answer that question, though, we have to take a look at the history of the model and everything you should know before considering collecting a vintage Milgauss. Then, we'll take a guess at what the future of Milgauss might look like. Maybe Rolex bought that vintage Milgauss as a reference for the next model; maybe we'll see it in a future museum or marketing campaign. Or, maybe a marketing campaign has already begun.
